What is science? Hi, I’m Emerald Robinson and in this’ what is?’ video we are going to try and pinpoint an answer to the question, what is science? Science can be defined as the process of observing and questioning the world around us. We also sometimes call it things we learn through experimentation, science. In fact, the term science itself comes from the Latin word that means knowledge and the names of many branches of science end with -ology which means ‘study of’ in Greek.  Scientists aim to gain new knowledge through a disciplined set of steps called The Scientific Method. The Scientific Method consists of asking a question, proposing a possible solution called a hypothesis. Testing the hypothesis through a series of experiments, examining the results of the experiments to see if the hypothesis has been supported or refuted and then proposing a new question or a new hypothesis.  Scientists can specialise in one of hundreds of different fields all which focus on different types of knowledge. For example, Physical Sciences like chemistry and physics examine the laws of nature. They are considered the fundamental sciences because everything in the universe obeys these natural laws. Astronomers, physicists and engineers study  physical sciences. Isaac Newton, Albert Einstein and Marie Curie were physical scientists.  Scientists in life sciences like evolution, microbiology and zoology study anything living. Medicine is also considered to be a life science. Charles Darwin and Rachel Carson are two well known biologists.  Social scientists, who take jobs in fields such as psychology, sociology and anthropology, study humans and human behaviour. Sigmund Freud and Margaret Mead were both social scientists. Science never ends. Everyday scientists make new discoveries and answer new questions but there are always new mysteries to uncover and problems to solve.

Task Description: This week we did a reading task about what is Science and I did another one of these but on google drawing, this one is about a video based on what is actual science. We had to find some words and highlight them to see if they will fit within the heading and paragraph. Immersion Assembly - Something in the Water.

Something in the Water.

The holidays were over and it was time for another term of school. We arrived at school and the school bell rang just then, and it was time for Immersion Assembly. Team 5 lined up outside and Room 3 was in the front row today.  For this terms korero is based on the ocean and sea life, the theme was  Something in the Water. While we were having the assembly, Mr. Burt, Mr. Sommervill, and Mrs. Tele’ a were cooking some fish and prawns from the sea. Some of the students could have some seafood after it was finished cooking, but if they were sitting up and smiling the prefects can come and give either a prawn or fish to you.

Finally it was time for the teachers to show there video’s what they are doing for the term. Team 1 was doing SOFA again like last term but this time it was about sea animals. Each animal they see they take a picture of it and name what it was.

 Next, it was Team 2 and they went for a walk down to  Tahuna Torea Reserve, they were looking at all the different things that they could see. The teachers also looked at the ducks and they got to feed them some bread.

After that was Team 3, what they had done is that they were trying to find a good animal to look after the sea. They went through all these animals and couldn't find any, but in the end, a nice fish came along. So they found them an animal that is caring and that could look after the sea.

It was time for Team 4 and they were searching for different animals that they could find on the beach. Also, they had to see what they could do and in the end, each teacher had a swim in the water.

Last but not least Team 5 and they did a performance on the stage instead of a video. So what they did was that each teacher had cardboard in their hand, it had the words DNA, GENE, CELLS, NUCLEUS, CHROMOSOME. Together that sang a song all about the different things in a cell and they all had beautiful voices.

Assembly was over and it was time to go back to class and start another term of learning.

Task Description: This is my writing about the Immersion Assembly that we had on Monday and it was all about the ocean and sea animals. All the teams had done such great things for there movie showing what they are going to be doing for the term. Each movie was fantastic and very cool, make sure to read what each team did. 1st Draft - Asia Imformative Writing.

What It’s Like In Asia!.

Today I am going to be talking about what it is like in Asia. Asia is the largest continent out of all 7 continents. But we are going to be talking about South Korea in Asia, so today I will be writing about 4 topics about this country. These are the 4 Topics I will be writing about-

1. Food
2. Culture and Traditions
3. Famous Places
4. Weather.

1. Food,

Our 1st topic is Food, and I will be writing about what type of food they have for any special dinner or dessert. There is very famous traditional food that they also have for any special occasion.

     2. Culture and Traditions,

The 2nd topic is Culture and Traditions, I would want to write about this because I want to know what they do for their type of culture.  This means what they do for New Years, Christmas, Birthdays, or Weddings. They might have something more interesting for all of these events compared to New Zealand.

     3. Famous Places,

After that is Famous Places, now this means if they go somewhere special I want to find out what are some of the places that they go to.

But some days they might be going out to celebrate something or just to go and visit. So if they go to any special place or famous place in South Korea, I would talk about it,

   4. Weather,

Last but not least weather, this means what is the weather like compared to New Zealand. I want to find out how sunny it is our stormy it is in South Korea. The weather is very fine in New Zealand but what is it like in South Korea? See the other paragraph to find out more about the weather.

Magical Playtime Draft 2.

Draft 2: Magical Playtime

Ok back to the story. . . . . when she came over to Aleyria and I, that was the time when Nevayah came too. Once they both arrived we decided to play Aleyria’s favourite game, Family, she loved to be the little sister because she was already one in real life. A little bit later it was time for a snack, but before we could go Aleyria saw something weird on the road. “Be Careful”, I said as she came back with a puzzled face, Aleyria was so excited to see what it was. I looked closely with my eyes opened wide and when all of us gather together we all touched it,suddenly something went wrong. . . . . .

We landed somewhere we have never been before, there was a tree with a door at the bottom of it. We all went through and it led us to a beautiful lake with butterflies all around. Our minds were frozen for a few seconds and we all looked at each other weirdly. Once all of us has looked at each other for a bit, we were so confused and scared at the same. But for Aleyria she was already screaming as soon as we got there, the toy that we touched was on the ground in the middle of us. When we all looked at it we thought that the toy brought us here and that we did not know how to get back home.

After a while we figured out straight a way that if we could touch the toy together again we could get back home. So we all gathered again and we touched the toy. . .

“Yay!,” my sister shouted, “well that wasn't too bad,” I said. Maybe this toy is magical Nevayah thought in her mind, “what do we do with it” I asked everyone. Aleyria suggested that should keep it and put it somewhere safe, “I think that is a good Idea” I said to her.

That was the day we had Magical Playtime and when we were all together having fun. As Nevayah and Neveah went home, Aleyria and I went in the basement and put the magical toy there. It was the greatest day of our lives we both thought in our head.

“Girls!,” our mum shouted out, “it’s time for dinner!”

“Ok,” we said.

1st Draft Narrative: Magical Playtime.

Today Room 1 Literacy Class is doing a Narrative that you could pick your own picture to write about. Here is the picture that I have picked.


But first here's a brain storm of what my story is going to be about:


Here is my writing:

One normal Thursday it was very sunny and I knew what that meant, I had to play
with my little sister (Aleyria) she is so cute, but she can be annoying. Every sunny day
we always play together but some days it can get very cranky. When I woke up to a
wonderful morning my little sister was already up, getting ready. When I went down
stairs she was having breakfast feeling so happy that we could play today. She asked
me if I was ready too, but I just said “not yet Aleyria, but nearly”. I went back upstairs to
brush my teeth and wash my face then after that I went straight to my bedroom.
My sister was right there on my bed waiting for me, and I knew she would do that to
me straight away.

Then I asked her “what are you doing Aleyria” I said in a cranky voice, “nothing
wrong I hope” she said back to me. I looked at her for a few long seconds, but she
wouldn't move.

So I walked out making my way back downstairs for breakfast. Now what should I
have ( thinking to myself in my head ), well today I should just have toast with butter on it.
This kind of meal just gives me good vibes while I eat it when i’m looking outside.

But suddenly I heard someone come down stair and of course it was my sister,
“now are you ready” she said as I was doing my dishes. “Yes, now I am Aleyria”
ok then let’s go play, and we left to go outside.

I was wondering if any of my friends were busy, so I gave them a call.
But firstly I rang Nevayah my best friend, she has just started at our school ever
since last year and she is so kind. When I rang her up she was still sleeping in her bed,
so I asked if she was doing anything today.

As I asked her what she was doing today she asked me back “are these one of the days,
that we play with your sister again Paige”, ohh yes I said back with a long sigh.
I looked back at my sister and she started coming over to me, what are you doing Paige,
oh you know just talking to my friend Nevayah.

Ok just wait one minute she said with a cranky angry voice, you are talking to your
friend instead of playing with me, umm I will be there soon ok I said back.
As I went back to the phone I talked to her very quickly, ok Vayah ( that her nickname )  
can you please! come over and play with us I asked her as fast as I could, ok fine she
said with a long voice.

Bye bye I said, see ya later I guess she said back.
Looking back at my sister I could tell that she was very bored,
so then I went over to her and played with her until Nevayah could come.
Also thinking about my other friend/cousin Neveah if she could come over and play too,
so I gave her a rang. But all of a sudden she was already walking past my house and
she saw me and Aleyria playing together. After she walked past she shouted
“hey Paigey ( that’s my nickname )”, oh hey come and come come and play, ok.

Paige - How are students able to respect our environment?

The future of our environment is riding on the shoulders of today’s youth.

When students make sure that their school is clean they are helping our world be a
healthy environment.

When you see rubbish on the ground pick it up and put it in the right bin.

 Once you see lots of rubbish around have some respect, pick it up and chuck
it in the bin. Also, by making sure you help each other clean up when you are at home or someplace else.

When picking up  rubbish it is really good  to put it in the right bin, here is what
bin the right rubbish goes in.  

fruit waste goes in the red bin/ waste bin, hard cardboard and other hard rubbish
goes in the yellow bin and lastly the soft plastic goes inside the black bin.

When seeing  people who is stuck seeing which bin the rubbish goes in
have some respect and go u and help them out don’t just walk past them,  help
them then it will be easy for other people.

Picking up rubbish anywhere not only a school.

Picking up rubbish at school is okay but how about picking up rubbish in the
streets and at home it could be yuck but it is also good picking up anywhere and
not only in
school so that means picking up rubbish in the streets and at home.

When walking past rubbish at school people will pick it up but walking
past rubbish at home or anywhere else some people won’t even pick they will just

Picking up rubbish anywhere not only at school.

If picking rubbish is easy at school then it should  be okay picking
up rubbish at home or the streets.

I know that picking up rubbish is yuck but then the environment will be
ugly and nasty, but still pick up the rubbish in the streets and at home.  

Here you have it all four reasons why students need to respect our
environment and become part of the solution.

Make sure you follow these steps and keep our environment beautiful and clean.
